Experience Peranakan Culture in Singapore

EXO offers a closer look at Singapore’s unique Peranakan culture

Singapore is renowned for its modern skyline and futuristic architecture, but it is also a city rich in history and culture. EXO invites guests to take a closer look at a unique element of Singaporean heritage with our Peranakan culture experiences.

The Peranakans are descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago between the 15th and 17th centuries.

Their unique culture blends Chinese and Malay influences with bits of Portuguese, Dutch and Indonesian elements. In present-day Singapore and Malaysia, the Peranakan community continues to proudly embrace their heritage, especially with regards to cuisine and crafts.

‘I am personally fascinated by the Peranakans: their mixed culture that is reflected in the city’s architecture, food, clothing and way of living,’ Ilaria Coco, EXO Product Manager, explains.

‘Joo Chiat and Katong are still, to this day, the best places to experience the vibe of the past Peranakan era’

To fully explore and understand the Peranakan culture in Singapore, EXO has two distinctive experiences that can be combined for a truly in-depth discovery.

The first is a half-day tour by vintage Vespa scooter around the Joo Chiat and Katong districts, two areas that are home to a large population of Peranakans. While on the tour, guests will see traditional Peranakan architecture, visit shops selling Peranakan garments, taste typical snacks and learn more about the past and present lives of the Peranakan people.

Ilaria explains, ‘Joo Chiat and Katong are still, to this day, the best places to still experience the vibe of the past  Peranakan era.’

A private tour of a collection of Peranakan artefacts and costumes is followed by a dinner of traditional dishes.

In the evening, EXO offers an exclusive night out focused on the food and traditional crafts of the Peranakan.

Meet with Alvin Yapp at The Intan, his home that he has lovingly converted into a repository of Peranakan artefacts, costumes, and more. He is on a mission to preserve and promote Peranakan culture and will lead guests on a private tour of the house followed by a dinner of traditional dishes, all the while sharing captivating stories and deep insights.

‘The Intan Museum is a piece of history kept alive by the owner,’ Ilaria adds. ‘His passion to share a glimpse of history is admirable.’

With this mix of exploration and insider access, EXO reveals a different facet of Singaporean culture.
